“A few very full days in Malaysia — training, reconnecting, learning, and thinking about what comes next.
In Kuala Lumpur, we trained a new cohort in Stronger Together with our partners Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia, working with people with lived experience to build the skills and confidence to provide structured peer support to others affected by cancer. There is something particularly powerful about watching a group move through the training — from reflecting on their own experience to learning how to use that experience thoughtfully in support of someone else.
I also had the chance to spend time with colleagues in Kuching, continuing conversations about strengthening peer support and people-centered cancer care in East Malaysia, and exploring what future collaboration could look like.
These visits are always about much more than delivering a training. They’re about listening to what is needed locally, learning from the people doing the work, strengthening relationships, and making sure what we build is grounded in the communities where it will live.
I’ll be back in Kuching next month for APOPC, when I’ll be speaking about meaningful engagement and centering lived experience in cancer policy. This visit has given me even more to think about before then.
