Carolyn Ee Recognised as a Stanford Elsevier’s Top 2% of Scientists for a Third Consecutive Year

Carolyn Ee, Deputy Director of Flinders LiveWell Cancer Research Centre, shared on LinkedIn:

“I’m delighted to have been recognised as a Stanford Elsevier top 2% scientist, in the subfield of General and Internal Medicine, for a 3rd consecutive year.

This recognition is a result of the substantial contributions of the lived experience experts and mentors who have generously given me their time and expertise.

I’m especially proud because it can be tough for GPs to build academic careers.

But this recognition only captures citations, and citations alone do not lead to meaningful change.

The lived experience experts I am privileged to have met and work with have given me questions that I need to answer.

Does this work for the person with cancer at home, between appointments, when they are tired, distressed and trying to live their life?

How do we get all our doctors to talk to one another so the person and family with cancer does not have to be the messenger?

How do we bridge culture and not just language with the care that we provide?

How do we build a system that recognises and lightens, rather than exacerbates, the invisible load that young women with cancer carry?

How do we help women cope with the unintended consequences of cancer treatment like early menopause and weight gain?

How can we maximise the role of primary care along the cancer continuum?

And how can we engage with our lived experience experts (or patient advocates, consumers, or any other chosen term) in a truly meaningful way, where they have a meaningful role in the decisions that affect their lives?

These are really tough questions to answer, but citations mean little unless our teams can move the needle on the solutions.

Congratulations to our Flinders Live Well Cancer Research Centre superstars.

I’m so proud of what our team is achieving in our mission to help all people with cancer live as well as possible, including our rising superstars who will no doubt be joining this list very very soon.”

To which Raymond Chan, President Elect at The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC), added:

“Our Flinders University LiveWell Cancer Research Centre has a mission which is to improve the health and wellbeing of people with a diagnosis of cancer through Research That Matters․

It is all about the people we care for and care about.

  • People diagnosed with cancer and their significant others
  • People who care for people with cancer
  • People who create policy and care structures for people with cancer

I have never regretted once to dedicate my life and my research this way.”
