“Victoria has made significant progress against cancer, but there is more to do.
More than 39,600 Victorians are diagnosed with cancer each year, and cancer remains the state’s leading cause of death.
Ahead of the 2026 Victorian State Election, Cancer Council Victoria has released its election priorities, calling for bold, evidence-based action to reduce the impact of cancer across our community.
We are asking the next Victorian Government to invest in four key areas:
Stop more Victorians developing cancer through stronger prevention initiatives on liver cancer, skin cancer, tobacco control, cervical cancer elimination and unhealthy food advertising.
Detect cancer earlier by boosting participation in bowel screening, particularly among under-screened communities.
Back world-leading research through investment in the Victorian Cancer Biobank.
Improve support for people affected by cancer, including stronger supportive care services and better support for regional and rural Victorians who travel long distances for treatment, as we advocate for improvements to the Victorian Patient Transport Assistance Scheme (VPTAS).
These are practical investments that can save lives, reduce pressure on the health system and help ensure every Victorian has access to the prevention, screening, research and support they need.
Cancer is relentless, but so are we.
