City Cancer Challenge (C/Can) shared on LinkedIn:
“In Kumasi, specialists from across the city’s cancer care network set those priorities together at a workshop on WHO’s Global Breast Cancer Initiative (GBCI) in June 2024.
One was strengthening diagnostic imaging capacity, including supporting the reinstallation of mammography in the largest public hospital and scaling up breast ultrasound, with C/Can working with local institutions to support this service upgrade.
An international tender process for the equipment was launched, and the new equipment is planned to be installed in a newly refurbished mammography room at the main reference centre.
A local health systems research study is being conducted with a local academic partner to understand where patients are being lost from suspicion to confirmed diagnosis.
This study is linked and aims to inform a patient navigation programme that is being set up across main institutions in the city.
‘Breast cancer awareness should extend beyond simply encouraging women to undergo screening. It is essential to ensure that when a woman takes that important first step, she has access to timely diagnosis, quality treatment, and the necessary support to complete her journey.
In Kumasi, we are collaborating to make that journey shorter, safer, and more equitable.’ – Abubakari Jaliu, City Manager.
Read the new guide on how to implement the GBCI, developed by C/Can with technical input from WHO.”
