Bishal Gyawali, Associate Professor at Queen’s University, shared a post on Facebook:
“I rarely feel proud these days. But today I’m extremely happy and proud. Let me share you a small story.
When I was a medical student in Nepal, I didn’t even know much about ‘evidence based medicine’.
During my oncology training, ASCO guidelines were like the Bhagwad Geeta or the Bible. I would try to remember everything that’s in the guidelines. I’d have the printed copy of those guidelines on my desk and later apps on my phone. I still do. Every oncology exam I had to take, I’d reread them again and again.
Today, that little kid from Nepal became the first author and co-chair of one of those ASCO guidelines and got them published in Journal of Clinical Oncology, one of the most prestigious oncology journals.
This is more than a dream come true. If I ever have to take an oncology exam again, I’ll be reading my own guidelines.”
