This is a great review and resonates with me. In my opinion: Figure 2 gets it absolutely right.. WHAT DID THEY GET RIGHT??
The potential of anti-PD-1 to interfere with efficient priming of a memory T cell response to vaccine antigens..
So many pharma have combined anti-PD-1 with their vaccine instead of giving a lead-in with vaccine to facilitate priming and memory generation. My opinion – That is a mistake!! There are multiple publications, including a recent paper..(PMID: 32610128)
Khleif and Gupta also cover the rapidly developing cancer’s Dark Matter antigen space. Many of these are derived from the ‘so-called’ JunkDNA and represent an entirely new area for cancer immunotherapy.
These two elements alone are sufficient reason to read this review, but the review also provides an introduction to the basics of tumor immunology and priming of anti-cancer immunity!
Kudos to Drs. Khleif and Gupta for this excellent contribution to our field!
