“Two weeks left in my genitourinary rotation at MD Anderson, and one of the things I have valued most during these months is the opportunity to see just how many different ways there can be to treat the same disease.
This photo was taken at the Proton Therapy Center, but over the past weeks I have also been working with high- and low-dose-rate brachytherapy, MRI-guided adaptive radiotherapy, SBRT, and other advanced radiation techniques.
Having all of these options available in the same institution – and seeing them used every day across a very high volume of patients – is a privilege that I am increasingly aware is not common.
But perhaps the most interesting part has not been the technology itself.
Many patients arrive having never heard of brachytherapy, adaptive radiotherapy or proton therapy. Understandably, they want to know not only what we can do, but why one approach might make more sense for them than another.
I have really enjoyed that part of the experience: sitting with patients, explaining the different possibilities, and helping translate increasingly sophisticated technology into something understandable and relevant to the person in front of you.
Two weeks still to go in GU, and still a lot to learn. But I am leaving this rotation with an even stronger sense that innovation in radiation oncology matters most when we can turn it into better, more individualized care for our patients.”
