Annie Wong: Fantastic Start to New Zealand Society for Oncology ASM 2025

Annie Wong, Senior Lecturer at The University of Auckland and University of Otago, Lung, Melanoma, Head and Neck Tumour Stream Lead at the Precision Medicine Initiative Molecular Tumour Board, and Consultant Medical Oncologist at Wellington Blood and Cancer Centre, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Fantastic start to this year’s New Zealand Society for Oncology ASM with a public plenary lecture on ‘Speaking up and Speaking out: Advancing Science in a Polarised World‘. Incredibly insightful, engaging discussions from Ashani Weeraratna, scientist, advocate, and scientific policy advisor, as well as University of Otago Vice Chancellor Grant Robertson, hosted by NZSO conference convenor Christopher Jackson.

My main takeaways:
  • Be a translator – find the common language, be the connection, understand what matters to people.
  • Know the consequences and solutions of our actions. We can make a difference. Choose how.
  • Build cross-disciplinary coalitions to find solutions before presenting to politicians or policymakers.

We as clinicians and scientists have an enormous role to play in our increasingly divided world. We’re natural connectors with our patients, our colleagues. Time to translate our knowledge to the people.”
