Amy C. Moore: Birthdays Are a Good Reminder That Learning and Growing Never End

Amy C. Moore, Director of Patient Engagement and Advocacy at Summit Therapeutics, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I celebrated a birthday yesterday. My daughter asked what I had learned.

In my line of work, I have learned that authenticity matters. Being who you are and being true to yourself. Not the filtered, AI-enhanced version you think others want to see. The real you.

Some have asked why I don’t separate my personal and professional lives on social media. My response has always been that people living with cancer don’t separate the two – they share the good and the bad because they are connected.

During the pandemic, when I was desperately trying to help people understand what was happening, they needed to see me as a person first – as a mom, a friend, a crazy cat lady – before they saw me as a scientist talking about confusing and often scary topics.

And our work doesn’t demand perfection. It requires humility. Honesty. Transparency. The ability to say ‘I don’t know.’ And yes, most importantly, the ability to say, ‘I was wrong.’

Birthdays are also a good reminder that learning and growing never end. And they are a time to give thanks for all the people who have shaped the person you have become.”
