“I had the pleasure of writing my first Editorial for and with The Lancet’s editorial team and the topic couldn’t have been more compelling: the unmet needs of people living with severe asthma.
A few things that stood out to me while working on the piece:
- 260M+ people live with asthma; severe asthma is 5-10% of cases but it has an outsized impact on patients’ lives
- Specialist referral is too often delayed
- Biologics have transformed the treatment landscape, but real-world data from the SHARP study tell a more sobering story
- Severe asthma is highly heterogeneous and we still don’t know enough about disease trajectories
- Prevention remains an open challenge, as seen in the ORBEX trial
Closing the gap between what’s scientifically possible and what patients experience will take investment in research, better health system support and a shift towards multidimensional, individualised care.
