Alessandro Ricciarelli: Music Therapy and Music Medicine in Comprehensive Integrative Oncology

“As part of the SIO series highlighting the new Comprehensive Integrative Oncology textbook, author Alessandro Ricciarelli shares an overview of Chapter 52, ‘Music therapy and music medicine in cancer care’.

Alessandro Ricciarelli was born in Italy and grew up in Germany. He is a New York State-licensed Creative Arts Therapist (LCAT) and a Board-Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC).

Alessandro holds degrees from Berklee College of Music, New York University, and Columbia University. In 2006 he joined the Integrative Medicine Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he has been providing music therapy for adult and pediatric cancer patients for the past 20 years.

Alessandro has presented nationally and internationally on music therapy; he will lead a workshop titled ‘Essential Harmonic Concepts for Music Therapists Using Guitar: Clinical Improvisation inside Winnicott’s Potential Space’ at the World Congress of Music Therapy in Bologna, Italy, in July 2026.
