Albert Bourla: Five Summer Reads on Science, Leadership, Cancer, and Hope

Albert Bourla, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer at Pfizer, shared on LinkedIn:

“Every August I try to slow down a bit. I spend more time with my family, get outside and give myself room to think. Taking care of yourself is just as important as the work. It is also what makes you better at it. The best leaders I know understand this, too.

Recharging is also about feeding your mind. Here are a few books I am recommending this summer. Each reflects where I believe our industry and our world are headed.

AI for Good by Josh Tyrangiel. AI has already been a force for good, including helping deliver the vaccine. This technology is fundamentally changing our society, and it will work best when it amplifies human judgment rather than replaces it.

Beyond Inheritance by Roxanne Khamsi. Our DNA is not fixed. Our cells change and mutate across our entire lives, and the more we understand how, the better we will get at preventing and treating complex diseases like cancer.

Genius at Scale by Linda Hill, Emily Tedards and Jason Wild. Breakthroughs are rarely the work of one genius. They come from many people building together, and a culture that lets them. I am proud that some of our own Pfizer colleagues appear in these case studies.

When We See You Again by Rachel Goldberg-Polin. This is a profound memoir by a mother whose son was taken hostage on October 7. I have had the honor of meeting Rachel several times, and her advocacy, rooted in the Jewish values of faith, memory and hope, moved me deeply.

We Need to Talk About Cancer by Sanjay Juneja. More than 1 in 3 Americans will face cancer in their lifetime, and some families understandably struggle to talk about it. This book can help, though my hope is that one day soon, children will read about cancer the way they read about diseases of the past.

If you pick one up, let me know what you think. And however you prefer to recharge, I hope you make time for it.”
