Ahmet Dirican, Professor of Medical Oncology at Medicana International İzmir Hospital, shared on LinkedIn:
“Is this the beginning of a new era in oncology combinations?
AstraZeneca, Daiichi Sankyo, and Summit Therapeutics are joining forces to evaluate Dato-DXd + ivonescimab across solid tumors, including a Phase III trial in first-line triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC).
This collaboration comes shortly after AstraZeneca’s $2 billion investment in Summit Therapeutics.
So, what does such a major investment – and three companies coming together around the same strategy – tell us about where oncology may be heading?
The biological rationale is particularly intriguing:
TROP2 ADC + PD-1/VEGF bispecific antibody
On one side, an ADC delivering a cytotoxic payload directly to tumor cells.
On the other, a bispecific antibody simultaneously targeting immune checkpoint signaling and angiogenesis.
This may therefore represent more than simply combining two promising drugs. It could reflect a broader shift toward integrating targeted cytotoxic delivery, immune modulation, and angiogenic inhibition within a single therapeutic strategy.
Of course, an important caveat: we do not yet have efficacy data for this specific combination. This is not a practice-changing result – it is a biological and clinical development strategy worth watching closely.
Could Dato-DXd + ivonescimab become a powerful combination?
And perhaps the bigger question: Could this three-company collaboration help shape the next biological paradigm in oncology?
We will see.”
