ACS Global Highlights the Global Burden of Cervical Cancer and the Path to Its Elimination

ACS Global shared on LinkedIn:

“As we approach November 17, Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action, we have reason for hope.

Cervical cancer is preventable. HPV vaccination, screening, and treatment of precancerous lesions can prevent cervical cancer.

Yet it remains a leading cause of cancer death. Cervical cancer kills nearly 280,000 women each year and is the leading cause of cancer death among women in 26 countries.

The burden is highly unequal. Mortality rates range from fewer than 2 per 100,000 women in Australia/New Zealand and Northern America to 21 per 100,000 in Eastern and Middle Africa, and reaching 55 in Malawi and Zimbabwe.

The impact is far-reaching. Cervical cancer causes premature death, disability, disruption to family life, while exacerbating the cycles of poverty and economic loss.

Fortunately, elimination is within reach. The challenge is ensuring that proven and cost-effective interventions reach women and countries most affected.

Follow ACS Global throughout November as we highlight the actions needed to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem.”
