Abhishek Shankar: Contributing to WHO IARC Handbook 21 on Lung Cancer Screening

Abhishek Shankar, Associate Professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Secretary General at the Asian Pacific Organization for Cancer Prevention (APOCP), shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I am honoured to have contributed as part of the International expert panel for the IARC WHO Handbook 21 on Lung Cancer Screening. This was a meaningful transition from reading the handbook publication to be the part of the international expert panel.

The past week’s meeting at the IARC WHO headquarters was both intensive and immensely productive, bringing together leading experts in lung cancer from diverse disciplines under chairmanship of Harry J de Koning, Principal Investigator of NELSON trial on Lung Cancer Screening, alongside an exceptional IARC – International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organization team, led by Beatrice Lauby-Secretan. The discussions culminated in a rigorous, evidence-based evaluation that will help shape the future of lung cancer screening and strengthen early detection strategies worldwide.

I was proud to represent India, meeting and learning from stalwarts in this domain, and participating in five days of in depth scientific discussions around the content of Handbook. The experience was deeply enriching and reaffirmed the importance of global collaboration in tackling lung cancer.

We are looking forward to sharing our work in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) in the coming months, followed by the release of the full Handbook, which is expected to play a key role in guiding national screening policies across the globe.”
