Pleased to share our invited review, The Current Cardio-Oncology Landscape Across Australia, published in Current Treatment Options in Oncology.

This was a great opportunity to bring together a national group to reflect on where cardiooncology has come from in Australia, where the field is now, and what needs to happen next.

Key messages:

  • Cardio-oncology in Australia has grown from clinician-led “grassroots” services into an increasingly structured national field.
  • Australia now has recognised clinical programs, International Cardio-Oncology Society Centres of Excellence, national collaborations through Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA), ACORES – THE INAUGURAL AUSTRALIAN CARDIO-ONCOLOGY RESEARCH & EDUCATION SYMPOSIUM, Australian Cardiovascular Alliance, and growing registry and trial infrastructure.
  • Australian research has made important contributions, including clinical trials, registries, fundamental research advances and emerging implementation studies.
  • Despite this progress, access remains uneven, particularly for regional, rural, remote and Indigenous communities.
  • The next phase needs sustainable funding, workforce development, telehealth and outreach models, formal training pathways, and integrated care across cardiology, oncology, haematology, nursing, pharmacy, allied health and primary care.

A huge thank you to joint first authors Daniel Chen and Lloyd Butel-Simoes, who did an outstanding job driving the manuscript, and to our terrific co-author team: Mitchum Bower, Mark Nolan, Sanjeev S. Kumar, Trent Williams, Bogda Koczwara, Philippa Ell, Joshua D. Bennetts, Gayathri R. Nair, John Lee, Satish Ramkumar and Doan Ngo.

It has been great to see cardio-oncology in Australia move from isolated pockets of excellence toward a more coordinated national program.
Our goal is to ensuring that people receiving cancer treatment have access to the cardiovascular care they need during treatment and throughout survivorship.”
