“Liver Cancer is preventable?! The first Chinese-led The Lancet Commission on cancer, 60% Liver cancer cases are preventable
Researchers from CUHK Medicine together with mainland scholars, led The Lancet Group Commission on liver cancer study, revealing that over 60% of liver cancer cases worldwide can be prevented. The report also predicts that if cases continue to rise at the current rate, the global number of liver cancer patients could double to 1.52 million.
This is the first time in The Lancet’s over 200-year history that a major report addressing cancer, was led by Chinese scholars, in collaboration with liver cancer specialists from countries and regions including Japan, the United States and Spain.
Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer in Hong Kong. The report highlights that 60% of cases are preventable by targeting modifiable risk factors — such as increasing hepatitis vaccination coverage, reducing alcohol intake, and managing obesity-related metabolic issues.
According to the report, the number of new liver cancer cases will nearly double to 1.52 million by 2050. If proactive liver cancer prevention measures are implemented globally, new cases could be reduced by 2% to 5% annually. By 2050, this could prevent up to 17 million new liver cancer cases and 15 million related deaths. Early detection with national screening programs for these two cancer types is imminent and lifesaving.
