Miriam Mutebi: Who Knew a Breast Model Could Spark Giggles and Save Lives?
Miriam Mutebi, Breast Surgical Oncologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital, shared on LinkedIn:
“Who knew a breast model could spark giggles and save lives?
Innovation just got hands-on, locally made, low-cost, and designed to train doctors and nurses where it matters most.
This week at AGA KHAN UNIVERSITY hospital Nairobi, we hosted Dr. Mary Nyangasi-Onyango, MD, head of the World Health Organization Global Breast Cancer Initiative.
This inititive seeks to explore collaborations with our Centre of Excellence for Women and Children headed by Prof Marleen Temmerman.
The star of the conversation?
An innovative hashtag#breastmodel being developed by the Aga Khan University simulation center run by a vibrant team of local and international experts under the leadership of Dr. Michael Moneypenny.
It’s:
- Crafted from local materials at a fraction of the cost.
- Built to train healthcare workers in early lump detection and safe biopsies.
- Designed with a soft internal template and skin covering that mimics the breast and patients in our region.
Why does it matter?
Because innovation meets science best when it’s practical, affordable, and locally rooted.
This model isn’t just clever, it’s a lifesaver in training, hashtag#diagnostics, and helping to reduce system delays and improving patient outcomes in Africa.
So tell me….Would you call this a breakthrough… or a breast-through?”
