Gender Norms and Barriers Driving Cancer Deaths in West Africa – UICC
Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Gender norms and systemic barriers are fuelling cancer-related deaths among women in West Africa, despite the availability of preventive tools:
- Breast and cervical cancers remain treatable, but too many women face late diagnoses and limited care options.
- Supportive care services are largely absent, and stigma continues to delay care-seeking.
- Engaging women in policy design and men as advocates is key to shifting the paradigm.
UICC Young Leader, Dr Samiratou Ouedraogo / PharmD., MPH, PhD. of Burkina Faso, speaks about the economic hardship, stigma, social norms, and other barriers that women face and that delay care, stressing the need for a human rights–based approach to ensure access to supportive services.
