“Very excited to share this NK cell resource, now published in Nature Immunology. Great teamwork by shared first authors Aline Pfefferle and Herman Netskar with all the wonderful collaborations highlighted by Aline in her post below. In the next phase, we will use this resource to take a closer look at the whole immune cell ecosystem in the tumor and see how the identified NK cell states are instructed by, and influence other immune cells, stroma and tumor. The ultimate goal is to use this information to design better NK cells for cancer immunotherapy.”

“Our pan-cancer human NK cell atlas, where we’ve deciphered the gene programs regulating healthy NK cells across blood and tissues and how these are perturbed in solid tumors, has just been published in hashtag Nature Immunology.
We identified six functionally distinct NK cell states, including a dysfunctional stressed CD56 bright state susceptible to TME-induced immunosuppression and a cytotoxic TME-resistant effector CD56dim state, the ratio of which was predictive of patient outcome. This was a great collaboration from the Karl-Johan Malmberg lab with Amir Horowitz, Sarah Teichmann, Jakob Michaelsson and Nicole Marquardt among others.
