Unlocking the Potential of AI in Healthcare: Addressing Challenges and Building Foundations in LMICs
Since the release of #ChatGPT, there has been growing recognition of the potential of generative #AI to disrupt various sectors, including #healthcare. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), the possibilities are tremendous for leveraging this technology to strengthen healthcare systems. However, it is important to address the misconception that deploying AI in LMICs is a simple task. The healthcare sector in these countries often faces challenges such as inadequate information system infrastructure, limited data availability and quality, and low digital literacy among professionals. At City Cancer Challenge, we are dedicated to supporting LMIC cities in building the necessary foundations for AI adoption. In Kigali, we are deploying an IT infrastructure to capture comprehensive cancer patient data, while in Tbilisi, we focus on strengthening the cancer registry and improving data quality. In Kumasi, our efforts center around training healthcare professionals to design and utilize digital tools that enhance the cancer patient journey.
