Abeid M. Athman Omar: The last four months have been very eventful for me
Abeid M. Athman Omar, Clinical Oncology Specialist at
“The last four months have been very eventful for me.
1. I reported to the IEO Istituto Europeo di Oncologia in Milan, Italy (the best Cancer Center in Europe), for a three month Breast Cancer Fellowship under Giuseppe Curigliano – the ESMO president-elect, sponsored by the European School of Oncology.
Prof. Curigliano being the Chief of Early Drug Development for Innovative Therapies, automatically I found myself in the Phase 1 clinical Trial Unit.
Initially it was very challenging for me, but thanks to Dario Trapani and all the IEO team I was able to adjust and fit in the system.
While in Milano, I attended many conferences including the Italian Precision Oncology conference and The ESMO Breast meeting held in Germany which were fully sponsored by Prof. Curigliano.
Thus, I left IEO with the experience of Breast Cancer management, better understanding of the Phase 1 Clinical Trials, Precision Oncology and management of toxicities.
I would like to sincerely thank Prof. Curigliano, the IEO team and ESO for these opportunities.
2. I received the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) International Development and Educational Award – IDEA. The Conquer Cancer, the ASCO Foundation fully funded our trip to the USA. We underwent rigorous leadership skills development.
Then we were able to attend the ASCO Annual Meeting in Chicago.
Thereafter, we moved to our respective centers to meet our mentors. I was privileged to be matched with Dr. Sara Tolaney the Chief of Breast Cancer Division at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston: the Best Cancer center in the USA, affiliated to Harvard Medical School.
This visit expanded my knowledge on breast cancer management and made many connections for future collaborations. I would like to sincerely thank the ASCO IDEA committee, Dr. Sara Tolaney and Dana Farber for these opportunities.
3. While in ASCO, I was awarded the OncoAlert Catalyst Fellowship to further my knowledge in oncolofertilty under Prof. Matteo Lambertini my good friend and mentor. I am honoured to be the first Awardee of the Oncoalert Catalyst Fellowship. Check out for the applications this year.
In addition, I was awarded the OncoDaily Yvonne Award in the Community Oncology Category for my voluntary work in my community.
Many thanks to Oncodaily, Oncoalert for these awards, and those who recommended me for these awards. Indeed, they have inspired me to give more to my community in changing the cancer dynamics.
You can reach me to learn how you can get the ASCO IDEA award, applications are opening on 1st July, 2024.
I would like to thank the Almighty, my family, my mentors, colleagues and my institution Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital for their sincere support. Looking forward to the future opportunities.”
