ESMO welcomes the EU Council Recommendation on Vaccine-Preventable Cancers
ESMO – European Society for Medical Oncology shared a post on LinkedIn:
“ESMO welcomes today’s adoption of the EU Council Recommendation on Vaccine-Preventable Cancers, which aligns with calls made by the Society to tackle mis- and disinformation on Human Papilloma Viruses (HPV) and Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) vaccination.
To address declining vaccination rates that could overwhelm healthcare systems with cancers that can be prevented, and achieve the goals of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, we urge EU decision-makers to:
- Adopt a target of vaccinating 90% of girls and boys against HPV by 2030;
- Enable best-practice sharing on HPV/HBV vaccination with low- and middle-income countries;
- Ensure HPV/HBV vaccination introduction and expansion programs optimize national cancer screening;
- Secure at least 1 billion euro EU budget to support implementing the recommendations at national level.
ESMO fully supports driving back HPV/HBV-caused cancers and stands ready to engage with EU and national legislators in developing robust policies.”
