“KNOWLEDGE IS POWER: June 13 through the 19th is National Black Family Cancer Awareness Week. In honor of this year’s theme, ‘Engaging Generations,’ Michaela Taylor, M.S., CGC, Cancer Genetics Counselor in CCR’s Genetics Branch, writes about the value and importance of genetic counseling for Black and African American people and how broaching this at times challenging conversation with loved ones can lead to empowerment.
Despite disparities amongst both providers in the field and patients who access genetic counseling, strides are being made. As Michaela writes, ‘While there are many factors that contribute to the disparities we see today, lack of knowledge is one that everyone can combat through having a simple conversation.'”
