Oral, Head, and Neck Cancer Awareness Week – April 16-22, 2024
Oral, head, and neck cancers encompass a range of malignancies affecting the mouth, throat, larynx, nasal cavity, sinuses, and salivary glands.
These cancers are often grouped together due to shared risk factors, including tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption.
Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, particularly with HPV-16 subtype, is associated with a subset of oropharyngeal cancers, especially in younger individuals who may not have traditional risk factors like tobacco and alcohol use.
Biopsy is crucial for confirming the diagnosis and identifying the histological subtype of the cancers.
The week aims to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and prevention of oral, head, and neck cancers.
