Trish Boh: A Media Day at St. Elizabeth Healthcare to share important updates regarding the state of cancer across our region
Quoting Trish Boh, Executive Secretary to Executive Medical Director of Oncology Services and Directors at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, on LinkedIn:
”We hosted a Media Day at St. Elizabeth Healthcare for World Cancer Day to share important updates regarding the state of cancer across our region (and country). In the last three decades, we’ve seen a remarkable decline in cancer mortality, saving approximately 4 million lives in the U.S. This achievement is mainly due to victories in tobacco cessation, advancements in early detection and treatment breakthroughs. However, as we celebrate these milestones, we face a new challenge: the rising incidence of cancer.
This year, for the first time, the U.S. is expected to see over 2 million new cancer cases, averaging nearly 5,500 diagnoses daily. This increase is influenced by the aging population and a notable rise in six of the 10 most common cancers: breast, prostate, endometrial, pancreatic, kidney and melanoma. Meanwhile, cancer deaths are projected to exceed 611,000 in
2024, highlighting a critical need for action.
As we navigate this complex landscape, it’s crucial to focus on comprehensive cancer care that includes prevention, early detection, and the development of new treatments. The “Cancer Statistics, 2024” report not only provides a sobering look at our current challenges, but also serves as a call to action for healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers. Together, we can address these challenges head-on, leveraging the power of early detection and innovative research to continue making strides against cancer.”
