Europe’s Progress on the Early Detection of Prostate Cancer – European Cancer Organization

“On European Prostate Cancer Awareness Day, we celebrate Europe’s progress on the early detection of prostate cancer.
Advances in risk-based early detection have proved able to save lives, while EU-funded initiatives are actively testing these new solutions on the ground. But the momentum needs to be maintained for people to benefit equitably from these improvements. Political support is needed. Adequate financing is needed.
Today’s event, in partnership with the European Association of Urology, Europa Uomo EU and Global Action on Men’s Health, gathered European decision-makers, clinicians, and patient advocates to explore how public policies can dramatically improve screening and early detection.
Discussion highlights:
- Dr Erik Briers, Vice-Chair of Europa Uomo and ECO Patient Advisory Committee Member, began: ‘Prostate cancer is the most commonly detected cancer in men. While more data is needed with respect to risk factors and prostate cancer, we need more attention and resources for early detection and screening to find cancer when it is still curable and save lives.’
- Professor Hein Van Poppel, Chair of the EAU Policy Office, emphasizes that the PRAISE-U project is a case study of the value of EU4Health support to meet common cancer policy challenges, such as new screening programme adoption. The final results, to be shared at the European Cancer Screening and Early Detection Policy Summit on 17-18 February, will demonstrate the effectiveness and value of prostate cancer screening derived from the pilot projects.
- Vytenis Andriukaitis MEP added: ’Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan remains a central pillar of EU health policy. But a plan is only as strong as its implementation. We must ensure that the Screening Recommendations are not sidelined: they must be fully integrated into the Multiannual Financial Framework. This is how we move from ambition to action. Support PRAISE-U and similar EU-wide health initiatives are not expenses: they are investments in lives, in dignity, and in the future of our Union.’
Peter Baker, Chief Executive, Global Action on Men’s Health, concluded:
‘We need to have national prostate cancer policies, we need to do more in education.’ “
