Ahmed Warrad: A Transformative Journey in Pediatric Oncology at Burjeel Medical City
Ahmed Warrad, Medical Student at Newgiza University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“My time at Burjeel Medical City (BMC) in the Department of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation has been one of the most transformative chapters in my medical journey so far.
I am especially grateful to my mentor Dr Zainul Aabideen, who welcomed me with the utmost respect and kindness. His mentorship not only deepened my clinical understanding but also showed me the power of humility, compassion and dedication in patient care. The lessons I learned from him will stay with me throughout my career.
During my training I had the privilege of strengthening my knowledge in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) from diagnosis and risk stratification to treatment protocols, supportive therapy and the crucial role of bone marrow transplantation in high risk or refractory cases. I came to understand how complex these journeys are and how evidence based medicine must always be paired with empathy when caring for children and their families.
On my final day I witnessed a moment I will never forget. A young patient had just been declared leukemia free after three years of treatment and the department held a cake cutting celebration. Standing there and listening to the heartfelt words of the patient’s mother reminded me of the true meaning of medicine. Beyond protocols and treatments it is about hope, resilience and human connection.
This experience has reinforced my passion for pediatric oncology and my commitment to one day making a difference in the lives of patients and their families. I know the road ahead will not be easy but moments like these remind me why I chose this path, to bring comfort, healing and hope.
I also want to highlight that such victories are never the work of a single individual. Behind every patient’s recovery is a dedicated multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, laboratory scientists, pharmacists and many more who work tirelessly, often through long nights, to ensure patients receive the highest standard of care. Witnessing this teamwork firsthand showed me that true healing is only possible when science and compassion come together through collaboration.
I leave BMC inspired, grateful and motivated to carry these lessons forward as I continue my journey in medicine.
Thank you to the entire Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and BMT department at Burjeel Medical City for giving me this unforgettable experience.”
