Emmanuella-Faith Amoako: Turning a Moment into a Mission for Pediatric Cancer Care in Ghana

Emmanuella-Faith Amoako, Paediatric Oncologist at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and Director of Clinical Affairs at Yemaachi Biotechnology, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Five years ago, a 14-year-old boy with lymphoma arrived at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital all the way from Tarkwa (5-hour journey) on the brink of death. Too sick to transfer to Accra (4 hours away), my team treated him despite limited resources. Fortunately, he survived! That moment sparked what has become a mission to bring paediatric cancer care closer to home for families across Ghana.

Since then, the team has seen over 100 children with cancer. But right now, the children with cancer share wards with many other children. Unfortunately, the anticancer treatment we give the children with cancer also makes them vulnerable to infectious diseases.

It is for this reason that I am leading a campaign to build the first dedicated pediatric oncology unit at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. This 24-bed facility will serve children across three regions of the country.
