Haimanot Kasahun: Reflections on Ethiopia’s Radiation Expansion Journey
Haimanot Kasahun, Clinical Oncologist at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, shared on LinkedIn:
“I’m happy to have been a part of the historic era of the Ethiopian radiation expansion program, witnessing firsthand the dawn of advanced cancer care in our country. The pic on left it was six years ago when I stood by the first linear accelerator (linac) ever installed in Ethiopia, a historic moment at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital. Fresh from a brachytherapy session and in my final year as a clinical/radiation oncology resident at Addis Ababa University, I paused to capture this image.
Pic on the right shows the current Linac machine being installed at my institution, St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College- SPHMMC, remarking the opening of the 6th radiation expansion centers.
I’m hopeful that better days are coming for Ethiopian cancer patients with access to radiation. Much work still remains to be done in increasing radiation access which is extremely limited (1 machine : 25 million Ethiopian people)!”
