EU Takes Strong Steps to Fight Smoking and Cancer – Lung Cancer Europe
Lung Cancer Europe shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The EU has confirmed it will revise its tobacco laws, following pressure from public health groups, including Lung Cancer Europe.
Tobacco is still the leading cause of preventable death in Europe, killing 700,000 people a year and driving over a quarter of all cancer cases.
The European Commission has now committed to revising the Tobacco Products Directive, the Advertising Directive and the Taxation Directive, after years of delay.
This follows sustained pressure from over 120 health organisations, including LuCE, calling for stronger action to tackle:
* Youth nicotine use
* Social media and online marketing
* Cross-border sales
* The growing use of e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches
A leaked impact assessment suggests the EU may propose a 258% increase in tobacco tax.
But some Member States didn’t support the call. That’s why civil society voices remain essential.
LuCE will continue to advocate for bold action, in line with Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the goal of a Tobacco-Free Generation by 2040.”
