Paolo A. Ascierto: “Becoming Human” – “Premio Ercole” at Giffoni
Paolo A. Ascierto, Director of the Department of Melanoma, Cancer Immunotherapy and Development Therapeutics at the National Cancer Institute IRCCS Pascale Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Giffoni is not just a festival; it’s an experience that inspires.
A place where ideas, emotions, and visions come together, shared by those who dare to imagine a better world.
This was my third time at Giffoni, and each edition is truly unique.
But this year was even more special: I had the honor of receiving the ‘Premio Ercole’, a meaningful recognition that allowed me to bring to the stage a message I deeply believe in.
With ‘Becoming Human’ as the theme, every word and thought resonated with even greater depth.
I spoke to the young audience about vocation, and how urgently we need to reclaim it.
More and more young doctors are choosing their medical specialty based on financial prospects, often opting for Aesthetic Surgery, while essential roles remain unfilled: General Practitioners, Emergency Doctors, Pathologists.
And our Emergency Rooms, unfortunately, are paying the price.
Being a doctor is not just a job. It’s a mission.
It means showing up where you’re needed most, offering empathy, presence, and care. Medicine cannot be only about career advancement. It must return to being about dedication, altruism, and service.
Thank you, Giffoni – once again.
Because you never return home quite the same as when you arrived.”
