Celia Diez de los Rios: How I Felt When a Spanish Politician Announced about His Cancer

Celia Diez de los Rios, Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“This week, a Spanish politician announced he has cancer.

Whenever someone with public presence speaks about cancer, I always feel sadness for what they’re going through – and even more so when they’re under extra public scrutiny.

But I’m also grateful when their story brings visibility to the importance of early detection, prevention, and the real needs of people living with cancer.

There are 3 things I truly appreciated in his announcement:

  1. He spoke about prevention and early detection – about how regular check-ups may have saved his life, and how important it is to follow up when something doesn’t look right.
  2. He talked about support – in his case, his wife encouraging him to attend follow-ups and being his rock. It reminded me how essential emotional support is at diagnosis.
  3. He praised the professionalism of healthcare providers – which, in a difficult political moment and in a system facing funding cuts, was a powerful message in support of public health.

I am not happy he’s going through this – no one ever should – but I deeply appreciate how helpful his first words have been for the cancer community. I hope he continues to be a strong voice for awareness, prevention, and care.”
