“Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Transform Lung Cancer Detection in Ethiopia
On June 30, 2025, St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College- SPHMMC proudly launched the Lung Cancer Screening Program, a pivotal step in fortifying Ethiopia’s public health system.
As co-investigator and lead of the SPHMMC team, I am honoured to contribute to our research titled:
“Evaluation of the Performance of Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Low-Dose CT Scan Interpretation to Detect Lung Nodules in Ethiopia: Implementation of the International Early Lung and Cardiac Action Program (I-ELCAP).”
This initiative builds upon the April 1 launch at Tikur Anbessa Specialised Hospital (TASH) and is facilitated by a collaborative partnership between SPHMMC, TASH, the Mathiwos Wondu Ethiopian Cancer Society (MWECS), the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation, and I-ELCAP.
Lung cancer continues to be the most prevalent cancer globally, resulting in the highest number of cancer-related fatalities. Limited data from Ethiopia indicates that over 80% of patients are diagnosed at advanced stages, rendering curative treatment often infeasible and leading to substantial healthcare expenses. However, AI-supported low-dose CT (LDCT) screening has demonstrated the potential to identify 80 – 90% of cases at early, curable stages (I or II).
Our study aims to assess the integration of artificial intelligence in interpreting LDCT scans, representing a transformative approach to enhance early detection, diagnostic accuracy, and equitable access, particularly in resource-limited settings.
I am profoundly grateful to collaborate with a highly competent and multidisciplinary team of investigators whose expertise and commitment are propelling this pioneering initiative. I extend my sincere appreciation to our Principal Investigator, Dr. Azmera Gissila, for his exceptional leadership, to MWECS for pioneering the introduction of this landmark project in Ethiopia, and to all our partners dedicated to saving lives.
Uniting our efforts, we are collectively shaping a more intelligent and equitable future for cancer care in Ethiopia.”
