“Today is Rare Cancers Awareness Day!
Facing any cancer diagnosis brings significant challenges, and for those with rare, less common, or complex cancers (like my clear cell ovarian cancer), the challenges are even greater. Such as limited access to affordable life-saving treatments.
Living with a rare type of ovarian cancer has meant I am excluded from certain drugs and clinical trials available to patients with more common ovarian cancer types. The financial strain is huge, alongside the mental and physical toll of trying less established treatments in the desperate attempt to witness my daughters grow up.
I am grateful to have lived for over 8 years with a rare and stage 4 cancer, but the past year has been a real struggle. It has been marked by an unsuccessful clinical trial and now an expensive immunotherapy regimen ($18,000 per cycle!) with harsh side effects and uncertainty around its efficacy.
Further, complications like cancer in my neck have led to emergency radiation and blood clots, and now I am currently battling a virus while on intense immunotherapy treatment.
Amidst these challenges, the unwavering advocacy and support of Rare Cancers Australia has been a beacon of hope. Their tireless work for policy change and improved access to treatments for rare cancer patients have already impacted numerous lives, offering solace to patients like me.
In my darkest moments, the support of my family and friends and the work of Rare Cancers Australia keep me going.
