Sachin H. Jain: The Value-Based Delusion in Healthcare

Sachin H. Jain, President and CEO of SCAN Group and Health Plan, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“For more than a decade, “value-based care” has been healthcare’s most fashionable buzzword.

Every conference deck, consulting proposal, and startup pitch has claimed to be “bringing value to healthcare.” But let’s be honest: in most cases, very little has actually changed in how care is delivered. Instead of reimagining the patient experience, many organizations have simply reengineered their revenue models.

Networks get narrowed. Risk gets shifted. Coding intensity rises. But does care feel more human, more seamless, more dignified for patients? Too often, the answer is no. This is the “Value-Based Delusion”: a well-intentioned idea that has been hijacked by clever financial schemes.

The rhetoric is high-minded; the reality is that care largely looks and feels the same—or in some cases, worse. If we are serious about value-based care, it can’t just be about new contracts or payment models or revenue capture. It must be about fundamentally rethinking care delivery itself and—most importantly—truly better outcomes for patients. Not just clever revenue capture. Not just about patchwork for small goals like “gap closure” or “transitions management.”

The next generation of healthcare leaders will be the ones who dare to make value real—not just profitable. Are we brave enough to be those leaders? What stands in our way?”
