Tobacco Taxation Gains Momentum in Kenya and Uganda Through Civil Society Mobilisation – UICC
Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Legislative efforts to increase tobacco taxation and reduce tobacco consumption gathered momentum in Kenya and Uganda over the past year, following sustained civil society mobilisation and coordinated policy advocacy supported by UICC and member and partner Cancer Research UK (CRUK).
At the World Conference on Tobacco Control in Dublin, UICC hosted a session on tobacco taxation efforts in East Africa, with Cancer Research UK (CRUK), which brought together grantees and partners engaged in initiatives aimed at strengthening tobacco tax policy and implementation in the region, specifically looking at the important work done by:
Uganda Tobacco-Taxation Coalition
Kenya Tobacco and Nicotine Tax Coalition
The discussion examined the role of evidence generation, capacity building, and multi-sectoral engagement – facilitated through coalition-building – in driving changes in tobacco tax policy and structural reforms in Kenya and Uganda.
With, Centre for Tobacco Control in Africa, International Institute for Legislative Affairs, Cancer Research UK (CRUK), McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer, and more.”
