Tracey O’Brien: It’s a Time of Studies, Hormones, And First Loves
Tracey O’Brien, Chief Cancer Officer and CEO of Cancer Institute NSW, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“It’s a time of studies, hormones, and first loves.
But for around 400 adolescents and young adults, aged between 15-25 who are diagnosed with cancer in NSW every year, the big C brings life as they know it to a halt.
While their peers are headed to their high school graduation or starting their first job, others are heading to hospital for chemo and having discussions about fertility preservation, clinical trials and palliative care.
That’s when the A team come in. The compassionate experts helping young people navigate their way through the unimaginable, at such a pivotal time of a person’s life.
Today I had the enormous privilege to chat to oncologist Dr Jessica Ryan, social worker Sami Elayoubi and clinical nurse consultant Cath O’Dwyer at the Cancer Institute NSW’s quarterly staff meeting – three members of the very big A team that work in our Youth Cancer Services.
Places solely created to meet the unique physical and psychosocial needs of young people in NSW and ACT, what Jessica, Sami and Cath reinforced is that Youth Cancer Services are helping empower young people to make their journey their own and ensure that cancer doesn’t define them.
If you’re a young person diagnosed with cancer, you want to have the A team in your corner. What a true honour to be on the same stage as these incredible people.”
