Saima Saleh: Fabulous Podcast on Breast Cancer Disparities for Black and Brown Women
Saima Saleh, Race and Education Film Club Team Member at Rehumanising Education, shared a post on LinkedIn by Mike Kinnaird, Content Producer at Cancer Can Do One Podcast, adding:
“Thank you, Mike Kinnaird, for producing such top quality podcasts! I’ve just listened to this fabulous episode which needs to be shared widely. Don’t miss out on this podcast to find out more about breast cancer from the perspective of black and brown women. I’ll be searching for documentaries or films about this content so that the Raceand Education Film Club can feature this theme in the future.”
Quoting Mike Kinnaird’s post:
“Tomorrow it’s a conversation and a half with Dr Olubukola Ayodele. She’s known as Bookie, heads up a breast cancer unit in the UK in a region with a strong ethnic community. And she’s a member of the European Cancer Organisation on a group looking at this very problem.
I knew there were disparities in cancer treatment for ethnic communities in the UK. I knew some of the very significant problems with breast cancer screening images that completely – and somewhat dangerously – ignored the needs of the community. But…
I didn’t realise it was a pan-Europe issue, I had no idea about the cultural issues with the discussion of breasts, for example, not being a comfortable discussion at all. How to even begin to tackle this one? Hugely complex. Another 20 minutes or so that I need to listen to and I recorded it, never mind anyone else. There’s a great deal to take in. Collectively, we can’t keep ignoring this.
The messaging is clearly very badly wrong. From tomorrow morning on the Cancer Can Do One podcast. It’ll be on your preferred podcast platform.”
