Sachin H. Jain Reflects on the Realities of Strategic Planning in Healthcare Leadership
Sachin H, Jain, President and CEO of SCAN Group, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Many organizations devote significant time and energy to annual strategic planning exercises.
These efforts are intended to crystallize a vision, communicate it clearly, uncover blind spots, and prepare the organization for the future.
And yet, in my experience, most strategic plans are obsolete the moment they’re finalized.
Strategy can be deliberate—anchored in clear choices and meaningful trade-offs.
But it often must also be opportunistic—responsive to changing circumstances and emerging realities.
Strategic plans are important.
Still, I often find myself uneasy with them, because deviations from the plan are sometimes perceived as signs of failure or a lack of discipline.
In truth, adapting—sometimes quickly and significantly—is not only necessary but wise.
For those with more talent and experience in strategic planning than I have:
How do you balance the need to define and articulate a clear strategy with the near-certain reality that it will require adjustment almost immediately?”
