“New research from the University of Kentucky highlights significant racial and rural disparities in financial toxicity among adolescent and young adult cancer survivors in Kentucky.
Black survivors and rural residents experience greater psychological distress and financial hardship following cancer treatment, with financial toxicity closely linked to increased anxiety, depression, and medical complications. While financial burdens affected all groups, Black participants reported higher anxiety and greater use of coping behaviors, emphasizing the urgent need for equity-focused, culturally tailored interventions.
The findings underscore the important role of financial navigation and policy reform in improving survivorship outcomes for underserved communities.”
