“It was a privilege to chair a joint European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO)–EORTC – European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer session at ESTRO25 with Joost Verhoeff:
“Novel methodologies for clinical research in radiation oncology – Time to think outside of the box?”
This session explored innovative and adaptive approaches to clinical research in radiation oncology, challenging traditional methods in a rapidly evolving field.
- The first talk by Sarah Brown addressed the limitations of traditional RCTs—highlighting high costs, lengthy timelines, and difficulties in keeping pace with technological advances.
- The second talk by Gareth Price focused on real-world evidence, its definitions, regulatory perspectives, and relevance to clinical decision-making.
- The third by Felix Boakye Oppong explored pragmatic trials as a bridge between efficacy and real-world effectiveness, with emphasis on their practical design and implementation.
- Finally, the Trials Within Cohorts (TwiCs) model was presented by Mieke Van Hemelrijck, offering an efficient alternatives to conventional randomised trials.
Together, these talks offered a compelling roadmap for modernising clinical research in our specialty.
Key message: This is an area of significant unmet need—we must develop clinical trials that better represent the diverse population of patients we see every day in our clinics.”
