Dr. Anirban Maitra Joins NYU Langone to Lead GI Cancer Research

Dr. Anirban Maitra, an internationally recognized leader in gastrointestinal (GI) cancer research and translational oncology, will be joining NYU Langone Health on September 1, 2025.

He will serve as the new Director of the GI Cancer Center and Associate Director of Translational Research at the Perlmutter Cancer Center — a pivotal appointment that marks a major step forward in advancing innovative cancer care and research at NYU Langone.

About Dr. Maitra

Dr. Maitra is globally known for his groundbreaking work in pancreatic and gastrointestinal cancers, especially in the areas of early detection, biomarker development, and personalized treatment approaches. His research has led to several critical advances in understanding and treating some of the most difficult-to-treat cancers.

Prior to joining NYU Langone, Dr. Maitra served as Co-Leader of the Pancreatic Cancer Moon Shot Program at MD Anderson Cancer Center, one of the nation’s leading cancer institutions. In this role, he spearheaded initiatives that bridged laboratory discoveries with clinical applications, significantly impacting patient outcomes.

Throughout his career, Dr. Maitra has been recognized with prestigious awards, including honors from the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He has also served on national advisory boards shaping the future of cancer research and treatment.

In addition to his research accomplishments, Dr. Maitra is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists and clinicians, building strong teams that combine clinical expertise with innovative research.

Dr. Maitra New Role at NYU Langone

At NYU Langone, Dr. Maitra will:

  • Lead the GI Cancer Center, directing multidisciplinary clinical and research efforts focused on cancers of the pancreas, liver, colon, stomach, esophagus, and other gastrointestinal sites.

  • Drive Translational Research Initiatives at the Perlmutter Cancer Center, ensuring that laboratory discoveries are rapidly and effectively translated into new treatments for patients.

His appointment is expected to strengthen NYU Langone‘s efforts in developing cutting-edge therapies, expanding clinical trial opportunities, and accelerating the pace of discovery.
