Gustavo Viani: When is the Best Time to Scan?
Gustavo Viani, Professor of Radiation Oncology at Ribeirão Preto Medical School, shared a post on X:
“PSMA PET after RT: When is the Best Time to Scan?
Objective
Evaluate the kinetics of PSMA PET signal in prostate cancer lesions after radiation therapy
Methods
•Prospective study with serial PSMA PET/CTs
•Patients with primary and oligometastatic prostate cancer
•PET scans performed pre-radiation therapy and at 3, 6, and 12 months post-radiation therapy
•radiation techniques: SBRT or conventional fractionation; doses tailored to lesion type
Key Results
•Significant PSMA uptake reduction occurs progressively over time
•Majority of complete metabolic responses observed at 9–12 months, optimal >= 8 mo
•Early PET (3 months) may overestimate residual disease
Clinical Tip: Timing matters! Later imaging better reflects true tumor response!”
