Carolyn Taylor: This year marks 19 years since my own diagnosis
Carolyn Taylor, Founder and Executive Director of Global Focus on Cancer (GFC), posted on LinkedIn:
“Every year, this date brings a flood of emotion. Gratitude for my life. Reverence for those we’ve lost. And deep humility for the privilege of doing the work I do through Global Focus on Cancer – work rooted in empathy, equity, and the belief that everyone, everywhere, deserves a fair chance at care, healing, and dignity.
This year marks 19 years since my own diagnosis – and while I carry immense gratitude, this moment also feels heavier than most.
I am terrified and furious watching the Trump administration propose devastating cuts to health care, cancer research, and programs that protect the most vulnerable among us. These aren’t just policy decisions – they are life and death for millions.
I know what it means to have access. I know what it means to not have to fight for every piece of your care. That experience fuels my work – but it also makes me acutely aware of how fragile progress can be.
We owe it to the people behind the statistics – the mothers, daughters, fathers, sons, friends, and neighbors – to fight like hell for a system that doesn’t forget them.
Nineteen years later, I’m still here. Still working for a world where care is not a privilege, but a guarantee.”
