Eugene A. Woods: Happy Valley shaped my story

“If you’d told the freshman version of me – the first in my family to step onto a college campus – that I’d someday stroll back into Happy Valley as the CEO of a nonprofit health system caring for six million patients, I’d been certain you had me mixed up with someone, and rushed back to Pattee Library at Penn State University to study for midterms. Yet, there I was last week, sitting across from President Neeli Bendapudi and swapping ideas about the future of health care and medical innovation, as well as meeting with the bright young minds in the Penn State Health Policy and Administration Department and the dedicated professors.
Of course, no trip home is complete without a scoop (or two) from the Creamery – the best ice cream on the planet – and playing a set with fellow musicians at Café 210 West, just like the old days. Walking the campus, I could feel the place buzzing with the same energy that once pushed me to dream a little bigger.
After talking with today’s students – tomorrow’s leaders – I’m more convinced than ever that the future of health care is in good hands. Happy Valley shaped my story; and seeing how it continues to shape theirs was nothing short of inspiring.”
