From stage 3 myeloma to remission: Julius Manyoni’s story of resilience and research – The Institute of Cancer Research

The Institute of Cancer Research shared a post on LinkedIn:

Julius Manyoni, 66, is a Black Belt 6th Dan karate instructor. Having been fit and healthy all his life, he was shocked to be diagnosed with stage 3 myeloma, a type of blood cancer, in September 2019.

He was told his cancer was treatable, but not curable.

Julius had six months of chemotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant, which sadly did not work for him. However, since 2020 he has been on a targeted treatment and is now doing well.

Thanks to his treatment, he is in remission and continues to enjoy the martial arts that have been his passion for over 40 years.

‘I wake up every morning feeling grateful to be here, grateful to see the sun another day and breathe fresh air.

I don’t think too much about the future, but I am very thankful for the scientists who have worked so hard to make these drugs possible. It is exciting to think that the next generation will have better treatments and more options available when it comes to tackling cancer.

Better research is the only way to treat cancer. I feel optimistic because scientists now are making such incredible progress.’

Our research is helping more patients like Julius survive blood cancer. A regular gift will support the vital work that our scientists are doing to discover new smarter, targeted treatments, so please donate today.
