Natalia Baran: Cathepsin-K inhibition by Sanggenol L induces lethal autophagy in gastric cancer
Natalia Baran, Leading Attending and Assistant Professor at the University Hospital Department of Hematology at Insel Group, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper she co-authored with colleagues published in Pharmacological Research – Modern Chinese Medicine:
“Thrilled to share some exciting news!
Gastric cancer (GC) remains a major global health challenge due to limited treatment options for advanced stages. Our latest research in Pharmacological Research Modern Chinese Medicine Elsevier for Life Sciences highlights the potential of Sanggenol L, a natural compound derived from mulberry root bark (Morus alba L.), as a promising anti-cancer agent.
Key Findings:
- Sanggenol L effectively inhibits GC cell growth and induces apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner.
- It activates autophagic flux and apoptosis via the AMPK/mTOR pathway, influenced by reactive oxygen species.
- Notably, Sanggenol L decreases cathepsin K activity, with higher CTSK levels linked to poor outcomes in GC.
Check out our publication.
Congratulations to all co-authors for this amazing collaboration!”
