Tracey O’Brien: The gap in cancer outcomes for Aboriginal communities is stark
Tracey O’Brien, NSW Chief Cancer Officer and CEO of the Cancer Institute NSW, reshared a post by on LinkedIn:
“We know the gap in cancer outcomes for Aboriginal communities is stark, and one of the biggest challenges we face as a country.
In NSW, an Aboriginal person is 2.1 times more likely to die from cancer and 1.5 times more likely to be diagnosed with cancer.
In cancer control and beyond, we need to work differently. We need to listen to, partner and learn from Aboriginal people so we can deliver the health outcomes that matter most to Aboriginal people.
People like Jessica Morris and the team at Strong Spirit Aboriginal Services are working hard to close the gap, and at the Cancer Institute NSW, we’re committed to being part of the change that’s needed.
We’re proud to be working hand in hand with Aboriginal people to create the first NSW Aboriginal Cancer Strategy, that at its heart, focuses on ensuring Aboriginal people live healthier and longer.”
“The Cancer Institute NSW is proudly supporting new research to improve the experiences of those impacted by cancer in Aboriginal communities.
Jessica Morris and Strong Spirit Aboriginal Services are leading a new project to develop community programs that embed exercise, diet and health literacy into cancer prevention and survivorship.
“This funding will be instrumental in empowering Strong Spirit Aboriginal Services to deliver the Strength in Motion program. It will enable us to develop and expand culturally safe health and lifestyle initiatives, co-designed by the community and led by Aboriginal voices.”
