Ravi Mehrotra: A woman gets diagnosed with breast cancer every 4 minutes and 1 dies

Ravi Mehrotra, Chief Medical Officer at Open Health Systems Laboratory (OHSL), shared a post on X by IARC, adding:

“Sorely unhappy to read this: A woman gets diagnosed with breast cancer every 4 minutes and 1 dies!

It’s truly heartbreaking to hear such statistics. Breast cancer remains a significant health challenge. Here are some key facts:

Frequency: In the United States, an estimated 310,720 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in 2024.

Mortality: Approximately 42,250 women in the U.S. are expected to die from breast cancer in 2024.

Thanks to advancements in early detection and treatment.

Survival Rates: The 5-year relative survival rate for breast cancer is about 91.2%.

However, in many parts of the world, the survival is much much lower.”

Quoting IARC’s post:

“Every minute, 4 women are diagnosed with Breast Cancer worldwide and 1 woman dies from the disease.

All stakeholders, particularly governments, can mitigate or reverse these trends by adopting primary prevention policies, and by investing in early detection and treatment.”
